Alice Queary-Marks

Alice Queary was the first born to Andrew and Georgia Queary and the eldest in the Queary-Marks family. The census of 1900 showed Alice as 14 years of age with a September 1885 birthdate. In this census, the family recorded her as the eldest child. Being the eldest child and a girl, we can only assume that she had many chores for a person her age. For most families, the eldest took on the role as housekeeper, cook, sitter, and farm helper. Like many, her day probably began early and ended late. In 1910, the census reflected Alice as head of her own household and still residing in Nevada County. Alice married Martin Marks, the nephew of Barton Marks in Nevada County. Three (3) children were born to this union, Henry, Corine, and Orene. Alice took her orphan sister and brother (Beulah and Dallas) to live with her and her family. Alice was a faithful church member and a loving mother to many who knew and loved her. Alice departed this life in 1965.
